The Shockers are excited to welcome Derrick Mayes II to the coaching staff as head coach of the 13U team.
Mayes brings something rare to the youth coaching ranks — recent professional playing experience combined with four years of Division I college baseball. His ability to model the game at the highest level gives Shockers players an extraordinary development advantage as they enter a critical stage of their baseball careers.
Mayes began his collegiate career at Southern University, one of the premier HBCU athletic programs in the country, before transferring to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, where he played three seasons. Competing in the MEAC at UMES, Mayes honed his skills against top-tier Division I talent and developed a deep understanding of what it takes to succeed at the college level — knowledge he now passes on to his players.
Most recently, Mayes took his game to the professional ranks, suiting up for the Frederick Keys in 2024. Playing professionally sharpened his understanding of advanced scouting, game preparation, and the daily habits that separate good players from great ones. That firsthand pro experience is an invaluable resource for young athletes looking to understand what the next level demands.
— Adam Weber, Shockers Program Director
Mayes will take over the 13U team immediately and begin preparing the squad for the upcoming season. The Shockers organization is excited to welcome a coach who has competed at every level of the game.
